GLP-1 treatment in Ireland, explained

Written and maintained by Rodrigue Monpea, Editor, Slim4MedocLast updated

What these treatments actually cost, how the State funding rules decide who pays what, and what the evidence shows rather than what the marketing says. Every figure is sourced. Where evidence is weak or contested, we say so instead of presenting it as settled.

Mounjaro vs Wegovy: which is worth the difference?

Mounjaro costs almost exactly double. What the head-to-head trial data actually shows, what the licences allow, and how to work out which one to ask your prescriber about.

Both contain semaglutide. Only one is licensed for weight loss and only one reaches State reimbursement. Why the identical drug gives opposite answers.

What this blog covers about GLP-1 treatment in Ireland

Most of what is written about weight loss injections online is either a product page trying to sell you something or an American article that does not describe how any of this works in Ireland. Neither tells you what a treatment costs here, why the Drugs Payment Scheme covers your neighbour’s semaglutide and not yours, or what happens to the money you have spent if you stop.

That is the gap these posts fill. Every one answers a question people actually ask a prescriber or a pharmacist, using Irish prices, Irish scheme rules and the published trials. Sources are named.

The questions people ask most about weight loss injections

Which treatment is best? There is no single answer, because the ranking changes depending on whether you mean largest average result, lowest monthly cost, lowest cost per kilogram, or the one you can actually get funded. The comparison page sets all five out on each measure, and Mounjaro vs Wegovy takes the two that most people are choosing between.

Why does the same molecule cost different amounts? Ozempic and Wegovy are both semaglutide, yet one is reimbursed for the right patient and the other almost never is. The difference is the licensed indication, not the drug. Ozempic vs Wegovy explains why that single distinction decides your bill.

Will the State pay for it? Sometimes, and the rule is narrower than most people expect. The Drugs Payment Scheme explained covers the €80 cap and the indication condition that catches most people out.

How bad are the side effects? Common, mostly gastrointestinal, mostly early, and manageable. Our side effects guide covers what to expect, how long it lasts and when a symptom needs a doctor rather than patience.

What happens if I stop? In the withdrawal trial, roughly two thirds of the lost weight returned within a year. What happens when you stop covers why, and what it means for budgeting.

How these posts are researched

Prices are first-party supply pricing rather than figures copied from other sites. Scheme thresholds such as the €80 Drugs Payment Scheme cap and the €1.50 medical card charge come from the HSE. Clinical statements come from each product’s Summary of Product Characteristics or from the pivotal trial, and the trial is named on the page so you can check it.

Where something is uncertain, the post says so rather than rounding it into a confident number. Where we get something wrong, it is corrected and logged publicly on the with the date and what changed. The full approach is on the methodology page, and the person responsible for it is named on the editor page.
