Ozempic is the most searched GLP-1 treatment in Ireland and the most misunderstood. It is a diabetes medicine, not a weight loss medicine, and that single fact governs both what it costs you and whether you can get it.

How we help you get Ozempic in Ireland

The medication is the easy part. The difficulty is finding a prescriber who will assess you, and knowing which pharmacy to fill the script at once you have it.

Is Ozempic available in Ireland?

Yes, and it is dispensed through registered Irish pharmacies. Supply has been intermittent since global demand rose sharply, and Irish pharmacies have at times prioritised patients with type 2 diabetes when stock was short, which is the clinically appropriate call.

Ring ahead rather than travelling, and ask your pharmacist to check wholesaler stock before the prescription is issued. You can verify licensing on the HPRA register.

How to get a Ozempic prescription in Ireland

Ozempic is prescription-only. There are three legitimate routes.

Getting Ozempic through your GP

€50 to €70 for the visit, and the only route that reaches State reimbursement. If you have type 2 diabetes this is the route that gets the treatment onto the Drugs Payment Scheme or your medical card.

Getting Ozempic through a weight management clinic

€35 to €90 for the consultation. Registered clinics prescribe for weight management where a GP may not, with monthly follow-ups and no reimbursement on the medication itself. An online consultation with an Irish-registered doctor is lawful and increasingly common.

Does the Drugs Payment Scheme cover Ozempic?

Yes for type 2 diabetes. No for weight loss alone. This is the single most consequential fact about Ozempic costs in Ireland and it catches most people out.

The medicine in the box is identical. What changes is the indication written on the prescription, and Irish reimbursement follows the indication rather than the molecule. That distinction is the difference between paying €80 a month and paying €337 a pen.

The Drugs Payment Scheme caps approved prescribed medicine costs at €80 per household per calendar month. Registration is free for anyone ordinarily resident in Ireland. How it works and how to register →

If you have type 2 diabetes, the Long Term Illness Scheme is worth checking too: it covers diabetes with no means test and no monthly cap at all.

How Ozempic works

Semaglutide mimics GLP-1, a hormone the gut releases after eating. It increases insulin release when blood glucose is high, slows gastric emptying and acts on appetite signalling. The glucose control is what it is licensed for. The appetite effect is why it became famous.

The Ozempic titration schedule

Four weeks at 0.25 mg, then 0.5 mg, and up to 1 mg where the prescriber judges it appropriate. Titration limits gastrointestinal side effects, which are worst in the first days at each new dose. Prescribing information is published by the European Medicines Agency.

Ozempic side effects

Common Ozempic side effects

Nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, constipation and abdominal discomfort. Most settle within days of each dose step. Smaller portions and avoiding very fatty meals helps.

Ozempic dose escalation to a maximum of 1 mg weekly. Lower than Wegovy, which reaches 2.4 mg.

When Ozempic side effects need a doctor

Severe or persistent abdominal pain, especially radiating to the back, needs prompt attention as pancreatitis is a recognised risk. If you have diabetic retinopathy, report any vision change promptly, as rapid glucose improvement can temporarily worsen it.

This page is not medical advice. Discuss side effects with your prescriber or pharmacist. Report suspected adverse reactions to the HPRA.

Who Ozempic is prescribed for

Ozempic is licensed in Ireland for adults with type 2 diabetes, alone or alongside other glucose-lowering medicines. Prescribing it purely for weight loss is off-label, which many Irish GPs will not do, particularly while supply is tight and patients with diabetes need it.

If weight management is your goal, ask about Wegovy or Mounjaro rather than pressing for Ozempic. Same class, appropriate licence, and a prescriber far more likely to agree.

Ozempic in Ireland: common questions

The 0.25 mg and 0.5 mg pens cost €260 each and the 1 mg pen costs €337 at private retail. A three-month titration pack is €809. If prescribed for type 2 diabetes and you are registered for the Drugs Payment Scheme, your household cost is capped at €80 a month instead.

Yes when prescribed for type 2 diabetes, for the standard €1.50 item charge. No when prescribed for weight loss alone. The medicine is identical either way. Reimbursement follows the indication on the prescription.

Often not. Ozempic is licensed in Ireland for type 2 diabetes, not weight management, and many GPs prescribe only within the licensed indication. For weight loss specifically, Wegovy or Mounjaro carry the appropriate licence and a registered weight management clinic is usually the realistic route.

No. Ozempic is prescription-only. A pharmacy cannot dispense it without a valid prescription from a registered prescriber, and no pharmacy may supply it to you online.

Both contain semaglutide. Ozempic is licensed for type 2 diabetes and reaches 1 mg. Wegovy is licensed for weight management and reaches 2.4 mg, the dose used in the weight loss trials. Ozempic reaches State reimbursement when prescribed for diabetes. Wegovy does not.
