Mounjaro is the newest and most expensive of the five GLP-1 treatments available to Irish patients, and the one with the largest average weight reduction in trial data. This page covers what it costs, how to get it, and whether the State will help pay.
How much does Mounjaro cost in Ireland?
Every Mounjaro package is priced identically at €554.95, whatever the strength. That is unusual and it works in your favour: the cost does not climb as you titrate upward through the dose schedule.
| Package | Contents | Stage | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | 1 × 2.5 mg + 1 × 5 mg | Starting | €554.95 |
| B | 1 × 5 mg + 1 × 7.5 mg | Titration | €554.95 |
| C | 1 × 7.5 mg + 1 × 10 mg | Titration | €554.95 |
| D | 1 × 10 mg + 1 × 12.5 mg | Titration | €554.95 |
| E | 1 × 12.5 mg + 1 × 15 mg | Titration | €554.95 |
| F | 2 × 15 mg | Maintenance | €554.95 |
What else you pay for Mounjaro in Ireland
The medication is not the whole cost. Budget for these too:
- Consultation: €35 to €90 privately, €50 to €70 at a GP
- Baseline bloods: €60 to €100
- Monthly review: most prescribers require one for the first few months
- Sharps bin: free at some pharmacies, a few euro at others

How we help you get Mounjaro in Ireland
The medication is the easy part. The difficulty is finding a prescriber who will assess you, and knowing which pharmacy to fill the script at once you have it.
- 1 We check the price for you. The same package varies between Irish pharmacies. We tell you what each charges and where the cheapest supply near you is.
- 2 We connect you with an Irish specialist. A registered prescriber assesses whether tirzepatide is appropriate for you. That clinical decision is theirs, not ours.
- 3 You get a valid Irish prescription if you are suitable, dispensed at a registered pharmacy and eligible for reimbursement where the indication qualifies.
- 4 We tell you when the price moves so you are not overpaying six months in.

Is Mounjaro available in Ireland?
Yes. Mounjaro is licensed and dispensed through registered Irish pharmacies. What varies is stock. Demand across Europe rose faster than manufacturing, so availability changes by pharmacy and by week.
Practical advice: ring ahead rather than travelling, and ask your pharmacist to check wholesaler stock before the prescription is issued. Independent pharmacies sometimes hold supply when chains have run dry, and the reverse is also true.
You can verify the Irish licensing status of any medicine directly on the HPRA authorised medicines register.
How to get a Mounjaro prescription in Ireland
Mounjaro is prescription-only. There are three legitimate routes.
Getting Mounjaro through your GP
€50 to €70 for the visit, and the only route that reaches State reimbursement. If you have type 2 diabetes this is the route that gets Mounjaro onto the Drugs Payment Scheme or your medical card. Many GPs will prescribe within the diabetes indication but refer weight management cases onward.
Getting Mounjaro through a weight management clinic
€35 to €90 for the consultation. Registered clinics prescribe for weight management where a GP may not, with monthly follow-ups and no reimbursement on the medication itself.
Getting Mounjaro through hospital referral
Specialist bariatric and endocrinology services in the public system. Free at the point of access, with waiting lists measured in months to years depending on catchment.

Does the Drugs Payment Scheme cover Mounjaro?
Yes for type 2 diabetes. No for weight loss alone. The medicine is identical either way. What changes is the indication written on the prescription, and Irish reimbursement follows the indication rather than the molecule.
That single distinction is the difference between paying €80 a month and paying €554.95 a package. It is the most consequential thing to understand about GLP-1 costs in Ireland, and it catches most people out.
The Drugs Payment Scheme caps approved prescribed medicine costs at €80 per household per calendar month. Registration is free and covers everyone ordinarily resident in Ireland. How the scheme works, and how to register →

How Mounjaro works
Tirzepatide acts on two receptors rather than one. It mimics GLP-1, as semaglutide does, and also GIP. Both hormones are released by the gut after eating and both influence insulin response and appetite signalling.
That dual action is the accepted explanation for why tirzepatide outperforms semaglutide on average weight reduction in trials. In practice most people report reduced appetite, earlier fullness and less food preoccupation.
The Mounjaro titration schedule
You start at 2.5 mg weekly for four weeks, then step up in 2.5 mg increments no more often than every four weeks, up to a maximum of 15 mg. Titration exists to limit gastrointestinal side effects, which are worst in the first weeks at each new dose.
Detailed prescribing information is published by the European Medicines Agency.
Mounjaro side effects
Common Mounjaro side effects
Nausea, diarrhoea, constipation, vomiting, indigestion and reduced appetite. Most are worst in the first weeks after a dose increase and settle as the body adjusts. Eating smaller portions and avoiding very fatty meals helps considerably.
When Mounjaro side effects need a doctor
Severe or persistent abdominal pain, particularly if it radiates to the back, needs prompt medical attention as pancreatitis is a recognised risk. Also contact your prescriber about persistent vomiting, signs of dehydration, or vision changes if you have diabetic retinopathy.
This page is not medical advice. Discuss side effects with the prescriber who issued your prescription or with your pharmacist. Suspected adverse reactions can be reported directly to the HPRA.
Mounjaro compared with Wegovy and Ozempic
| Mounjaro | Wegovy | Ozempic | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Active ingredient | Tirzepatide | Semaglutide | Semaglutide |
| Receptors | GLP-1 and GIP | GLP-1 | GLP-1 |
| Licensed for | Diabetes, weight | Weight management | Type 2 diabetes |
| Dosing | Weekly | Weekly | Weekly |
| Price | €554.95 | €279.95 | from €260 |
| DPS, diabetes | Yes | N/A | Yes |
| DPS, weight loss | No | No | No |
Mounjaro costs roughly twice what Wegovy does per package. Whether that is worth it depends on how you respond, what you tolerate and what your prescriber recommends. The full comparison, with the trial data →
Who Mounjaro is prescribed for
Prescribers in Ireland typically consider GLP-1 treatment where BMI is 30 or above, or 27 and above alongside a weight-related condition such as hypertension, sleep apnoea or type 2 diabetes.
Those are the general thresholds, not a decision. Suitability depends on your medical history, current medication, and factors a website cannot assess. Personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma, MEN 2, pancreatitis, or pregnancy all change the picture. The clinician decides.

Mounjaro in Ireland: common questions
€554.95 for a two-pen package, whatever the strength. Add €35 to €90 for a consultation and €60 to €100 for baseline bloods. If prescribed for type 2 diabetes and you are registered for the Drugs Payment Scheme, your household cost is capped at €80 a month instead.
Yes. In practice many GPs prescribe it within its diabetes indication and refer weight management cases to a specialist clinic. The GP route is the only one that reaches State reimbursement, so it is worth asking first even if you expect a referral.
In head-to-head trial data tirzepatide produced a larger average weight reduction than semaglutide. It also costs roughly twice as much. Averages hide substantial individual variation, and the largest average result is not automatically the right choice for a given person.
Not the medicine itself. An online consultation with an Irish-registered doctor is lawful and common, and that is how services like Webdoctor operate. What is not permitted is a website posting you the medication directly. Parcels ordered from overseas sellers are intercepted at the border and destroyed, with no recourse to recover the money.
Each pen delivers four weekly doses, so a two-pen package covers eight weeks at one dose per week. During titration you move through strengths rather than repeating them, which is why the packages pair consecutive doses.
Weight regain is common and well documented across the GLP-1 class. These medicines work while they are being taken, which makes cost a long-term question rather than a course with an end date. Worth factoring in before starting.
