How we work

Methodology

Written and maintained by Rodrigue Monpea, Editor, Slim4MedocLast updated

Every price on this site is a figure we can point to a source for. Treatment prices come from supplier pricing supplied to us. Scheme figures come from the HSE and Citizens Information. Clinical statements come from the European Medicines Agency and the HPRA. Where we are unsure, we say so rather than estimating.

Where treatment prices come from

The prices published on our product pages are supplier pricing, listed by pack and by strength exactly as supplied. We show the pack size beside every figure, because a price without a pack size is meaningless.

Irish pharmacy retail prices vary. We say so on every page rather than presenting one number as the price.

What we exclude from the headline treatment price

The published price is medication only. These sit outside it because they vary by person rather than by product:

We list those separately on each page so the real total is visible.

How we handle uncertainty in pricing data

Three rules we hold to.

Why our prices differ from what you are quoted

They will sometimes, and it is worth understanding why before you assume one of us is wrong. Ireland does not fix the retail price of a prescription medicine that is not being reimbursed. Each pharmacy sets its own dispensing fee and its own margin, so the same pack can differ by €40 or more between two pharmacies in the same city.

Our figures are a reference point, not a promise. Use them to know roughly what you should be paying and to recognise a quote that is well out of line, then confirm the exact number with the pharmacy that will dispense to you.

How often this is checked

Treatment prices are reviewed whenever supply pricing moves. Scheme thresholds, such as the €80 Drugs Payment Scheme cap and the €1.50 medical card charge, are checked against HSE publications and updated the week a change is announced.

Clinical figures, such as trial averages and titration schedules, come from each product’s Summary of Product Characteristics or the published trial, and change only when the manufacturer or the regulator changes them. Every page shows the date it was last updated.

What we deliberately leave out

Before you act on any of this

Every treatment on this site is prescription-only in Ireland. What suits you depends on your history, your weight and your other medicines, and only a registered prescriber who has assessed you can make that call. Use our prices to plan the cost, and take the clinical decision to them.

Not sure what you would actually pay? Tell us your county and we will find the best price near you and a prescriber who can assess you.
