Can you get Ozempic for weight loss without diabetes in Ireland?
Sometimes, but it is off-label and you will pay full price. Ozempic is licensed in Ireland for type 2 diabetes, not for weight loss. An Irish prescriber can legally prescribe it off-label at their own clinical discretion, but many will decline and point you to Wegovy instead, which contains the same molecule and is actually licensed for weight management. What Ozempic is actually licensed for in Ireland
Ozempic is semaglutide, licensed by the European Medicines Agency for the treatment of type 2 diabetes in adults. Weight loss is a well-documented effect of it, but it is not what the licence covers, and that distinction decides almost everything about your cost and your access.

Off-label Ozempic prescribing in Ireland: what it means and whether it is legal
Off-label prescribing is legal in Ireland. A registered prescriber may prescribe a licensed medicine outside its licensed indication where they judge it clinically appropriate for that patient. It happens routinely across medicine.
What it also means is that the prescriber carries more of the responsibility. If something goes wrong with an off-label prescription, the manufacturer’s licence does not cover the use. That is a real consideration for a GP, and it is the main reason many will simply say no and offer the licensed alternative instead.
Why an Irish prescriber may refuse Ozempic for weight loss
- There is a licensed alternative. Prescribing off-label when an on-label option exists is hard to justify clinically.
- Supply. Ozempic has been through Europe-wide shortages driven partly by weight loss demand. Prescribing it off-label while people with diabetes cannot fill their scripts is a position most prescribers will not take.
- Dose ceiling. Ozempic tops out at 1 mg or 2 mg weekly depending on the pen. Wegovy goes to 2.4 mg, which is the dose the weight management trials used.
- No reimbursement. Off-label, you pay full price, so the prescriber is signing you up to a cost you may not have understood.
What it costs if you do get it
Ozempic runs €260 to €337 per pen in Ireland. Prescribed for type 2 diabetes it is reimbursed, so the Drugs Payment Scheme caps your household at €80 a month and a medical card brings it to €1.50 per item. Prescribed off-label for weight loss, none of that applies and you pay the full amount every month.

Buying Ozempic online in Ireland: the route that does not work
Buying Ozempic online without a prescription is not a shortcut, it is illegal supply. Prescription medicines cannot lawfully be supplied online in Ireland. They must be prescribed by a registered prescriber and dispensed by a registered Irish pharmacy. The HPRA detained over 750,000 units of illegal medicines in 2025, a large share of them weight loss products, and falsified semaglutide pens have turned up across Europe containing insulin.

What to ask your Irish prescriber for instead of Ozempic
If weight loss is the goal, ask about Wegovy or Mounjaro rather than Ozempic. Both are licensed for weight management, both are prescribable on-label, and neither puts your prescriber in an awkward position. Compare all five treatments to see where each one lands on cost and average result.
If you have type 2 diabetes and also want to lose weight, that is a different and much easier conversation, because Ozempic is then on-label and reimbursed.
Where Irish patients are actually being prescribed semaglutide
Private weight management clinics cluster in Dublin, Cork and Galway, and those are the prescribers most comfortable writing semaglutide for weight management, on-label as Wegovy. Outside the cities the route is usually your GP, and GP willingness varies a great deal between practices in the same county.
If your GP in Mayo, Kilkenny or Wexford declines, that is not a dead end. A registered Irish clinic can consult remotely and issue a prescription your local pharmacy will dispense, which is lawful. What is not lawful is any site offering to post you the medicine itself.
