How to store and travel with your GLP-1 pen
Store unopened GLP-1 pens in the fridge at 2°C to 8°C, and never freeze them. Once in use, most pens can be kept below 30°C for a limited number of days set out in the patient leaflet for that product. A pen that has frozen must be discarded even if it looks fine. Storing an unopened GLP-1 pen
Unopened pens live in the fridge at 2°C to 8°C, in the original carton, away from the light. Keep them off the back wall of the fridge, which is the part most likely to dip below freezing, and out of the freezer compartment entirely.
Do not use a pen past its expiry date, and do not use one that has been stored outside that range for longer than the leaflet allows. These are protein-based medicines and heat degrades them, so a pen that has been warm is not simply a slightly weaker pen, it is one you cannot rely on.
Storing a GLP-1 pen once you have started using it
After first use most GLP-1 pens can be kept either in the fridge or at room temperature below 30°C, for a set number of days that varies by product. That in-use period is printed in the patient information leaflet, and it differs between Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro and Saxenda.
Write the date of first use on the pen. It sounds fussy and it is the single most useful thing you can do, because four weeks later nobody remembers.
If your Ozempic or Mounjaro pen freezes
Discard it. This is not a judgement call. Freezing damages the protein and you cannot tell by looking, so a pen that has frozen goes in the sharps bin regardless of how it appears. Ringing your pharmacy is worth doing, because a pen ruined by a fridge fault is sometimes replaceable.
If a GLP-1 pen is left out of the fridge
How long, and how warm, decides it. A pen left on a kitchen counter overnight in an Irish winter is a different situation to one left in a car in July. Check the leaflet’s in-use period, and if the pen was unopened and out for longer than that, contact your pharmacist rather than guessing. Given a pack can cost several hundred euro, that phone call is worth making.
Flying with a GLP-1 pen from Ireland
- Carry it in your hand luggage. The hold is unpressurised for temperature and can freeze. Never check a pen through.
- Bring your prescription or the pharmacy label. Keep the medicine in its original labelled carton. Security will ask about needles and the label answers it.
- Ask your pharmacist for a travel letter if you are going outside the EU. It costs little and prevents a long conversation at a border.
- Use a proper medical cool bag for anything over a few hours, not a freezer block against the pen. Direct contact with a frozen block will freeze the medicine.
- Take more than you need. Replacing a GLP-1 abroad without a local prescription is difficult and expensive.
Within the EU you are travelling with a lawfully prescribed medicine and there is no issue in principle. Outside it, rules vary, so check the destination country’s requirements before you fly.
Needles and sharps disposal in Ireland
Use a new needle for every injection and never share a pen, even with the needle changed. Used needles go in a sharps container, not the household bin. Irish pharmacies supply sharps bins and most will take a full one back, though some charge. Budget a little for it, and more if you are on a daily treatment like Saxenda, where you get through seven times as many needles as a weekly one.
Rybelsus is the exception
Rybelsus is a tablet, so none of the cold chain applies. It has its own rule instead, and a stricter one: take it on waking on an empty stomach with no more than 120 ml of plain water, then wait at least 30 minutes before food, other drinks or other tablets. Get that wrong and you absorb less of what you paid for.

In smaller towns across Kerry, Longford or Wicklow it is worth confirming with your own pharmacy first, because the alternative is a civic amenity site that may be some distance away.
