Saxenda vs Wegovy: which is better value in Ireland?
Wegovy is better value on almost every measure that matters over a year. Saxenda has the lower entry price at €149.99 against €279.95, but it is a daily injection with an 8 per cent average result, against Wegovy’s weekly dosing and 14.9 per cent. Over twelve months Saxenda costs roughly €3,816 and Wegovy €3,359. Saxenda’s real advantage is availability and a gentler start.
What Saxenda and Wegovy each are
Saxenda is liraglutide, a daily injection, the older of the two. Wegovy is semaglutide, a weekly injection, and the same molecule as Ozempic at a higher dose. Both are licensed in Ireland specifically for weight management, which makes them the two on-label choices.
The price comparison people get wrong
Saxenda starts at €149.99 for a single pen, dropping to €106.00 per pen in a five-pack. Wegovy is €279.95 for a two-pen package. On the shelf, Saxenda wins comfortably, and that is why it reads as the budget option.
Then you count the pens. Saxenda is injected every day, so a pen lasts a fraction of the time a weekly pen does. Run both at maintenance dose for twelve months and Saxenda comes to roughly €3,816 against Wegovy’s €3,359. The cheaper pack is the more expensive year.
Cost per kilogram lost
This is the figure that settles it. On an 85 kg starting weight, Saxenda’s 8 per cent average is 6.8 kg, and Wegovy’s 14.9 per cent is 12.7 kg. That puts Saxenda at roughly €561 per kilogram and Wegovy at €265.
Wegovy is not slightly better value here. It is roughly half the cost for the same kilogram. The comparison page runs the same calculation across all five treatments.
Saxenda daily against Wegovy weekly, and why dosing decides more than you expect
A weekly injection is 52 injections a year. A daily one is 365. People underestimate how much that matters until about week six.
There is a flip side. A daily dose leaves your system faster, so if you tolerate it badly you are not stuck with a week of it. Some prescribers prefer starting anxious patients on a daily treatment for exactly that reason, then moving them to weekly once they know how they react.
Where Saxenda genuinely wins
- Availability. Wegovy has been through Europe-wide supply constraints. Saxenda has generally been easier to actually get hold of.
- Lowest cost to try. €149.99 for one pen is the cheapest way to find out how you tolerate a GLP-1 at all.
- Shorter commitment. If it does not suit you, you are out one pen rather than a two-pen pack.
- Longer track record. Liraglutide has been in use longer, which some prescribers weigh.
Side effects
Broadly the same profile, because they act on the same receptor. Nausea, reflux, constipation, mostly early, usually settling within four to six weeks. Both titrate up over several weeks to reduce that.

What Irish State schemes pay towards Saxenda or Wegovy
Nothing, in most cases. Both are licensed for weight management, and no weight management indication is currently reimbursed in Ireland. So neither the Drugs Payment Scheme €80 cap nor a medical card reduces the cost of either when prescribed for weight loss.
Should you ask your prescriber for Saxenda or Wegovy?
If you are committed and want the better twelve-month outcome for less money, ask about Wegovy. If you want the cheapest possible way to find out whether a GLP-1 suits you at all, or Wegovy is not available where you are, Saxenda is a reasonable place to start and you can move later.

Availability differs more by pharmacy than by county
Wegovy has been through Europe-wide supply constraints and Saxenda has generally been easier to obtain. In practice that plays out at pharmacy level rather than county level: one pharmacy in Cork may have Wegovy in stock while another in the same city is waiting on an order.
If you are in Dublin, Galway or Limerick you have enough pharmacies nearby that a few phone calls usually find stock. In Kerry, Clare or Monaghan it is worth asking your pharmacy to order ahead rather than assuming a repeat will be there, particularly if you are mid-titration and cannot afford a gap.
